She had been trying to sleep for the passed three hours. Her body was tired, but her mind was moving at the speed of light. The initial thought, or memory in this case, that kept her awake was her younger brother- but that was a whole two hours ago.
Earlier that evening she was cleaning out her study and found an old picture of him when they were younger. It was a picture from Christmas. Alita could tell because there was a fake pine tree in the background and empty boxes wrapped with colorful paper. Even though the picture was in a harshly contrasted black and white, she could remember exactly what colors were on those boxes. His hair was slicked down and parted to one side. His suit plain black, and his tie was red. The smile he had on his face was quite broad- and Alita knew exactly why. He was in the middle of a hearty laugh, and that was only because Alita was making goofy faces from behind the smell camera man. She made a mental note to take the picture to get scanned, blown up, and framed to put on her desk.
Now her mind was on every meaningless and pointless thing anyone could imagine. Alita actually caught herself thinking about shoe laces at one point, and with that very though frustration took over. She let out a ragged sigh and threw the blankets from her body. Pushing herself up wearily, she ran her fingers through her hair, wincing a bit as they ripped through tiny kinks along the way. Her sleep attire was simply that of a white, baby doll night gown. It looked like it was something meant for summer nights, but Alita was a heat miser beneath the sheets, and anything more would have only contributed to her discomfort.
She was on her way to the balcony, a place she spent very little time in. What she needed now was fresh air, and that was the perfect to place to get just that. On the way, she snagged her black robe which was draped over the back on a chair. Alita slipped it on, wrapping around her tightly before she stepped out. Instantly she was hit by the bitter cold of night, exhaling gently as if stepping into a pool for the first time. Her breaths were visible before her, revealing themselves as sheer, white clouds lasting only for a brief second till the next breath replaced it. She leaned against the side of the white rail, resting her elbows against it.
Chestnut hues fixated on the moon which lit the area all around her. It easy out shown the faint sparkles of the stars in the sky, she noticed. Focusing on everything else made her forget about how absolutely cold it was. How this was supposed to tire her? She had no idea, but if she wasn’t going to be sleeping, she didn’t want to be in bed.
